Youtuber and science communicator/educator Veritasium wants to understand how good autonomous cars really are. There are two issues with this video, first, the video is sponsored by Waymo, and the second Versatium even says it is weird getting into a self-driving taxi and that the technology is “functional” at best even though he is excited about the future of driverless cars and services.
True self-driving cars will become a reality until computer hardware and software is powerful enough to cope with the complexities of driving in the real world among real people. Computers make pre-programmed binary decisions, humans are crazy by comparison and no CPU hardware or software is able to cope with such an environment… yet.
That being said, today’s computer technology is the most powerful ever, and it will continue to get more powerful. Ten years from now will be the beginning of the mass adoption of self-driving cars. As of now, the technology is going through a kind-of beta-testing phase. Tesla has fully autonomous driving tech but it still requires the human touch behind the wheel at all times.
Real self-driving will begin when cars actually drive by themselves with the action of a smartphone swipe or voice command. Waymo is trailing its self-driving technology and gave Verisatium money and an opportunity to try its current autonomous car.
