Moonlighting policy: Indian Multinational corporation, Wipro is in the news for firing 300 employees who were allegedly involved in moonlighting against its policy. According to the company the employees were working for the competitors while being on the payroll of the company.

What is Moonlighting?
Moonlighting means taking up a second job or multiple other work assignments apart from one’s full-time job. Companies have opposed the practice, saying that employees doing multiple jobs can impact their productivity.

Moonlighting has become a topic of debate in the IT industry as working from home (WFH) became the normal norm during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is believed to have led to a rise in dual employment.
However, Indian IT firms are divided when it comes to moonlighting. For some, it is unethical while others call it the need of the hour.

Pros of Moonlighting

Financial stability:
Some people work two jobs to have financial stability in life. It can be used to pay off debt, or to cover unforeseen expenses like car or house repairs.

Acquire New Skill:
A second job can help one acquire new skills. In addition, the skills and experience will improve your resume.

New opportunities:
Working a second job means one will cross paths with more people, learn new skills and face new challenges. This can open up new opportunities for people.

Cons of Moonlighting

No work life balance:
Working two jobs can be hectic and does not provide a proper work life balance. This can be a big disadvantage for people with a family as they won’t be able to give time to family members.

Increase in Stress levels:
Working two jobs will increase stress and stress lead to many health problems.

Conflict of interest:
Working for a competitor may put you in a difficult position at your full-time job.

Problems with performance:
Due to extra hours, less sleep and divided attention, your performance at your full-time job may slip and have a negative effect on your career.

Why are companies against moonlighting?

Businesses are against the approach as according to them having staff perform numerous tasks can reduce productivity. As working from home became the norm during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is thought to have caused an increase in dual employment, moonlighting has come under discussion in the IT industry.

Food tech startup, Swiggy, was the first company to announce an official policy allowing its employees to take up gigs or projects outside of their regular employment at the company during the hours away from work. However, side projects at startups has been a common practice.
