Six Devices to Foster Independence in Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities can sometimes feel like a step away from independence, but with the right technology and home comforts around, it doesn’t have to. There are many reasons why this type of care is necessary including high-maintenance medical requirements and conditions that require higher levels of attentiveness. However, that’s not to say that the senior in question can’t retain some independence alongside their new living situation. A great way to do this is through technology devices and this article takes a look into six of the most appealing options.

Home Assistants

Bluetooth and wifi-enabled home assistant devices are commonplace in current times. They are small, an unimposing device that sits connected to a power source. They are useful for things such as alarms and reminders, answering questions, and playing music or the radio. They can be set up and are easy to use once the basics have been grasped. So easy, in fact, that they suit every age and technological ability level. These are a must-have accessory to any home but can enable a person in need of care to self-manage as well.

DAB Radios

Radios may be becoming somewhat redundant in modern times, but there is still a certain appeal to them. DAB enabled radios to allow for a better sound and a clearer frequency to give an excellent auditory experience. These are handy for things like news updates, entertainment, and even background noise to detract from loneliness.

Television

Televisions are perhaps the most common item across the globe. Most households have one and it is easy to see why. The entertainment and engagement factors are undeniable and they can create a source of routine and comfort. Smart TVs allow for intuitive user interfaces and can be set up to facilitate regular shows and recordings.

Laptop or PC

Laptops and PCs can be harder to navigate for some elder people; however, that’s not to say that this is insurmountable! There are many benefits for people in assisted living to have such devices, including:

  • Staying in touch with family.
  • Playing brain-focussed games to boost mental activity levels.
  • A way to nurture hobbies and interests.

Gaming Console

Perhaps less common amongst the elderly population; however, gaming consoles can be a great source of joy and provide entertainment while maintaining essential dexterity skills and concentration levels and even combatting degenerative diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Gaming PC

Similarly, the right gaming PC, for example, one from this Lenovo 1080p Gaming Computers range, can provide the same level of serotonin boost in the brain. They also have a social element and provide stimulation too. The screen size can be adjusted and though not traditional, gaming online has major benefits for the elderly!

Assisted living does not have to equal a loss of autonomy. Thankfully, technology advances in recent years translate into a better sense of well-being for people previously in this type of situation. Homes can be a social place where people stay connected and brains stay stimulated. It’s all about finding the right avenues.
