The 2022 World Cup kicks off on November 20 in Qatar. With 32 teams from around the globe vying for the title, passions will be riding high at our very international law firm. Here’s who we’ll be supporting at Harris Bricken, broken down by groups.
Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
We don’t really have a dog in this fight, but we do have many good friends in Ecuador, including some who help keep us informed of what’s happening there with hemp and cannabis generally. Meanwhile, Harris Bricken’s vocal contingent of FC Barcelona fans will be wishing their players from the Netherlands, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay, all the best during the World Cup.
Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales
With the majority of our offices located in the United States, the USMNT will find plenty of support at Harris Bricken during this World Cup. And we want Iran to make it to the second round as well, given some of their players’ brave stances in support of women’s rights in the country. We will secondarily be rooting for England because we represent a number of companies from there and often work with British law firms on international matters.
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Adrián Cisneros Aguilar does a great job holding down the fort for Harris Bricken in Mexico, so the least we can do is join him as he cheers on El Tri. Robert Kossick spent years working in Mexico and will surely be donning the green jersey. There will also be support for Poland. For our managing partner, Vince Sliwoski, it’s a matter of ancestry – and for the aforementioned Barcelona contingent it’ll be a matter of supporting a certain other -ski.
Special dispensation will be given to Akshat Divatia, a.k.a. the Leo Messi of immigration law, to support Argentina, on account of his time studying abroad in Buenos Aires.
Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
It is hard to imagine that powerhouse (and winners of the last World Cup) France will not top this group, so we might as well join the le bandwagon. One of our firm founders, Dan Harris, lived in France as a kid and did his foreign study there and he remains a Les Bleus fan. But we’ll also be on the Socceroos’ side, together with our colleague from Australia, Mathew Alderson.
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan
Given our presence in Barcelona, Madrid, and Palma, we’ll of course be supporting Spain as they try for their second World Cup title. But we’re also lining up with Barcelona-based Nadja Vietz as she roots for her native Germany. Things may get heated when La Roja matches up against the Die Mannschaft at Al Bayt Stadium – but, hey, two teams can go through from each group.
Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
You can basically see Canada from our Seattle office, so we’ll be rooting for the CANMNT during the World Cup – something that not even our Canadian friends have done since 1986, when the team last qualified for the tournament. And we’ll be joining Shannon Brandao as she supports Belgium, which until very recently she called home.
Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Brazil is home to our maiden office in South America, so you can count on us joining Rodrigo Guedes Nunes as he urges on the Seleção to a sixth World Cup title. And with Cameroon-born Ngosong Fonkem joining the firm just in time for this year’s games, the Indomitable Lions will have our support as well.
Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea
With Lisbon being home to our newest office, Portugal is a clear Harris Bricken choice. And though most of us won’t be able to do so in Korean like Jihee Ahn will, we’ll cheer on South Korea as well during this World Cup.
Who are you supporting?
